(February 14, 2024 – Toronto ON) Atom Egoyan’s latest feature, Seven Veils is in the news with a win in Victoria and holds the coveted opening film spot in Ottawa.

The 30th annual Victoria Film Festival wrapped on February 11 with its awards announcement. Robot Dreams, an animated film about the friendship between a dog and a robot was named best feature, while Seven Veils took home the award for best Canadian feature. Earlier today we learned The International Film Festival of Ottawa (IFFO), set to open on March 13 at the Ottawa Art Gallery, has selected Seven Veils to open the festival with Atom Egoyan in attendance to introduce his 2023 drama.

“We are both thrilled and honoured to open the fourth annual IFFO with renowned, Academy Award-nominated Canadian filmmaker Atom Egoyan’s latest film,” said IFFO Executive Director Tom McSorley. “Egoyan has a long history with our organization, dating back four decades when we premiered his debut film, Next of Kin (1984), in Ottawa. Moreover, he was our first-ever Canadian Masters guest artist in 2016. Given this history, it’s exciting and apt that his latest film will open IFFO 2024.”

The International Film Festival of Ottawa (IFFO) brings an eclectic mix of shorts and features from around the globe to Canada’s capital. Held annually in March by the Canadian Film Institute, IFFO is hosted at the Ottawa Art Gallery, the ByTowne Cinema and other venues within the Ottawa downtown core. In addition to its screenings, the Festival offers professional development programming tailored to Ottawa’s growing film production industry.

Seven Veils stars Amanda Seyfried as a theatre director whose repressed trauma surfaces as she prepares to mount a production of the opera Salome. Following the screening, Egoyan will participate in a short Q&A session. The Canadian short film Heat Spell, directed by filmmaker Marie-Pier Dupuis will screen before Egoyan’s feature at the Festival.

IFFO 2024 runs from March 13 to March 24 and includes 25 feature films from 26 countries and 21 Canadian short films. Click here for a link to The International Film Festival of Ottawa and other March 2024 Canadian film festivals.
