(August 28, 2024 – Toronto, ON) We first wrote about Ric Esther Bienstock when she was honoured with the Gordon Sinclair Award for Broadcast Journalism by The Academy of Canadian Cinema & Television  in 2014. Ten years later she is headed to the Emmys to pick up an award, again. This time the renowned Canadian documentary filmmaker will be honoured with the prestigious Silver Circle Award at the 45th Annual News & Documentary Emmy® Awards, taking place on September 26, 2024. The National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences (NATAS) will recognize Bienstock for her outstanding contributions to the television industry over her illustrious 25-year career.

Bienstock’s filmography includes some of the most compelling and impactful documentaries of our time, such as Enslaved: The Lost History of the Transatlantic Slave Trade, The Accountant of Auschwitz, Tales from the Organ Trade, and Sex Slaves. Her work has not only earned critical acclaim but also numerous awards, including an Emmy for Outstanding Investigative Journalism, two Edward R. Murrow Awards, a Dupont-Columbia Award, two Amnesty International Awards, 2 Donald Brittain Awards, 5 Canadian Screen Awards, a Genie Award, and many others.

In 2019, Bienstock was appointed an Officer of the Order of Canada for” her commitment to raising awareness of global events and conflicts through film”.

“I’m beyond thrilled to be recognized in this way and humbled by receiving this award alongside these other incredible women who I have always admired and respected,” said Ric Bienstock. ” What an incredible honor.  I hope this doesn’t mean I’m being put out to pasture!!”

The 45th Annual News & Documentary Emmy® Awards will be held at the Palladium Times Square in New York City on September 26 and will be streamed live on NATAS’ dedicated viewing platform, powered by Vimeo. The ceremony will be hosted by W. Kamau Bell, the Emmy and Peabody Award-winning host, filmmaker, and stand-up comedian, who will lead the event in celebrating the year’s best in documentary filmmaking. In addition to honoring Bienstock, NATAS will also induct several other outstanding professionals into the Gold and Silver Circles, recognizing their significant contributions to television over 50 and 25 years, respectively.
