Wedding in White is set in a small town during World War II and tells the story of a 16-year-old college dropout, Jeannie, played by US actress Carol Kane. One night she is raped by her older brother’s best friend and army buddy, played by Doug McGrath. Jeannie finds herself “in trouble” at a time when being in trouble meant instant disgrace to the family. Her father, played by Donald Pleasence is a stereotype of that era when many men would say “boys will be boys but that the girls who do were whores.” His first reaction is to beat her and threaten her with banishment from the family home. Overbearing and often inebriated, his ultimate solution to the crisis is to marry his daughter off to his best friend Sandy. Sandy happens to be a Scot of about 60 who is usually drunk. This excellently played drama was voted Canada’s Best Film in 1972.
