Hard to believe unless you’ve lived there but Montréal in mid-winter can be a marvelously romantic place to keep warm, especially if you are young. The Ernie Game is set in the mid-1960s, and the city itself doesn’t really matter in this romantic feature. It is a story of young people at a time when the leading edge of the baby boom was leaving home but had yet to really establish homes of their own. Enter Ernie, who is suffering a form of alienation that allows him to accept life as a game. He seems totally unable to make anything more of it. But for those who befriend him and eventually turn him loose again, his game is not enough. The Ernie Game won Canadian Film Awards in 1968 for Best Feature Film and Best Direction.
