Based on Allan Stratton’s best-selling and critically acclaimed novel of the same name, The Dogs began principal photography in Northern Ontario in late October 2022. The story centres on thirteen-year-old Cameron Weaver and his mom. They have been running from Cameron’s psychotic father for many years. Or maybe his mom kidnapped him? Cameron wishes he knew for sure. They move into a rented and dilapidated farmhouse near the quiet town of Wolf Hollow. The previous owner, Frank McTavish, was killed by his own guard dogs shortly after his wife ran off with her lover and their son, Jacky. The current owner, Art Sinclair, lives on the next farm over and tends both properties. When Cameron discovers a collection of child’s drawings indicating abuse, it compels him to probe deeper into the history of the house and its former occupants. Soon, he starts to hear and see the ghost of Jackie, who insists he never left the farm with his mother. Cameron suspects Frank McTavish killed them both. But is Jacky even real? Or is Cameron losing his mind?
The Dogs was nominated for Best Picture at the Montreal Independent Film Festival and Valerie Buhagiar was named Best Female Director for this film.
