Scarborough is based on the award-winning book by Catherine Hernandez, which follows the lives of three young children over the course of a school year in Scarborough, once its own borough with its own local government, but in 1998 it was amalgamated into the city of Toronto. The children learn to navigate poverty, abuse, and the challenges of living in a low-income area in one of North America’s largest cities. The screenplay was written by the author in a documentary style based on her own experiences raising a child in Scarborough. It was selected to screen in the Discovery program at TIFF 2021.
Note: The majority of the cast had never acted before and this is their only credit.
