Based on the book of the same title by Robert A. Wright, Our Man in Tehran tells the real story of how Canadian diplomats rescued 6 American diplomats from Tehran during the 1979-80 Iran hostage crisis. The main subject of the film is Canada’s former ambassador to Iran, Ken Taylor, who personally sheltered six American diplomats in a secret operation that became known as “the Canadian Caper.” In traditional documentary fashion, this production is mainly straight interviews with the main players at the time, including former Minister of External Affairs Flora MacDonald, former Prime Minister Joe Clark, reporters like Joe Schlesinger, CIA agent Tony Mendez and several of the hostages mixed with archival footage. Supposedly the star of the real operation, there doesn’t seem to be enough of Ken Taylor in the film yet it is still a gripping, informative documentary that chronicles the details of an event where lives were on the line. Think of this doc as the true story behind the award-winning fiction film, Argo.
