My Winnipeg is Guy Maddin’s ode to a time and place. It is part memoir, part fantasy. From his boyhood home above a beauty salon to the hockey arenas where his father worked and where much of Maddin’s childhood was spent, the film takes its viewers on a surreal journey in this “documentary” on his hometown of Winnipeg, Manitoba. Ann Savage (femme fatale of 1945’s Detour) plays Maddin’s mother in the re-enacted family scenes, which are portrayed in film noir style. My Winnipeg was named Best Canadian Film at the 2007 Toronto International Film Festival.
