Free-spirited Elliott (Maisy Stella in her feature film debut) pilots her small boat with an outboard engine toward a marina with her best friends Ro and Ruthie aboard. Meanwhile, her family is waiting for her at home with a surprise birthday cake to celebrate her 18th birthday. On shore, Elliott stops at the coffee shop and hooks up with the barista, Chelsea, with whom she has been flirting since 8th grade. When she returns outside, Ro tells her that they brought along hallucinogenic mushrooms for the trio to take together in the woods. Elliott’s tripis not what dreams are made of as she comes face-to-face with her wisecracking self…at 39 years old (played by Aubrey Plaza). When the older, wiser Elliott begins to hand out warnings about what her younger self should and shouldn’t do, Elliott realizes she has to rethink everything about family, love, and what’s becoming a transformative summer. And then there’s Chad.

NOTE: My Old Ass is an American movie, but with a Canadian-born writer-director, and both a Canadian lead actress and her love interest in the cast, and the fact it was shot north of Toronto in the Muskoka Lakes area between August and October 2022, we’ve decided that although it isn’t technically a Canadian movie, it is Canadian enough for us.
