Shot entirely in Quebec Matthias et Maxime is almost a repertory effort, yet at its core this is an intimate work. It looks at the friendship of a group of young adults, but more specifically focuses on the two title characters, childhood best friends, comfortable in their heterosexuality. However, after they are asked to have an onscreen kiss for a student short film, a certain doubt begins and both men need to deal with their preferences, their choices. This turmoil also impacts their tight circle of friends and eventually leads them to a deep loving feeling for each other, much to to their own astonishment.
Matthias et Maxime was selected to screen in competition at the 2019 Cannes Film Festival.
