Based on the 2008 novel Feuchtgebiete by English-German author Charlotte Roche, the word means wetlands or marécages in French. The film version, the first feature from director Guy Édoin, is set on a dairy farm in Québec`s Eastern Townships. A drought has held the land in its cruel grip and as it worsens the lives of everyone in the Santerre family will be touched. In the course of the drama all will have to learn to forgive. The use of the word wetlands is meant to convey more than just the earth if the film remains true to the story. The original novel was hailed as an instant classic in erotic fiction dealing with cleanliness, sex and femininity. It is no accident that a rough translation of the family’s name could be, without earth.

Marécages was selected to screen during Critics’ Week at the 2011 Venice International Film Festival.
