Based on Unidentified Human Remains and the True Nature of Love by Brad Fraser, who adapted his own stage play, the film is a dark-humoured drama about the lives of a group of young people set in the time it was written, the early 1990s. The two main central characters are roommates and ex-lovers, David and Candy. David is a former television actor who is now a waiter. Candy is a book critic. They were a couple until David proclaimed his homosexuality. Candy is also questioning her sexuality, having started a lesbian affair that leaves her wondering if she just might be happier with a woman. David is also moving on, or trying to, and is attracted to Kane, a handsome, young busboy. Meanwhile David and Candy’s lives are entangled with a collection of friends or acquaintances through friendship or romance, including Benita, a young dominatrix and part-time psychic, and Bernie, a boastful but insecure young businessman. The couplings and shifting relationships of these characters play out against a sub-plot of a serial murderer who has been terrorizing the city’s women. Love and Human Remains was Deny Arcand’s first film in English.
