George Waters is 10-years-old and lives in a rundown home near Halifax Harbour with his wheelchair-bound former sailer grandfather Captain Waters (Scottish actor Ian Bannen). Fond of telling ghost stories, one day he spins out a yarn about the time he saw Captain Kidd’s ghost on nearby George’s Island (a real island in Halifax Harbour) where Kidd’s supposed buried treasure might be found. When George retells this story in school he is punished by his teacher Miss Birdwood (Sheila McCarthy), who believes George’s odd behaviour can be traced to his grandfather. Placed with a foster family, George is kept locked in a basement cell. When Halloween night arrives, George and another adoptee, Bonnie (Vickie Ridler), escape with Captain Waters and head for George’s Island. A chase ensues but the noise awakens the ghosts of Captain Kidd and his men, who must defend their chest of gold.
George’s Island was named Best Live-Action Film at the 1990 Chicago International Festival of Children’s Films
