It is the summer of 1968 and ten-year-old Léon has toyed with vandalism, theft, running away, breaking and entering and a few failed suicide attempts including an incident at a pool, and another inside a freezer. His behaviour stems directly from his parents who are candidates for The World`s Worst Match, if such a realty show existed in 1968. They are given to yelling matches and a form of domestic unpleasentness that includes smashing plates and destroying paintings. As their relationship heads seriously south, Léon’s actions become increasingly outrageous and dangerously self-destructive. But he is not totally alone. His best friend is Lea, a somewhat exasperating girl who is being raised by her alcoholic uncle, and who may be as troubled as he is. In a final act of self preservation, Léon’s mother flees to Greece to start a new life. Left to his own devices Léon spirals ever downward yet closer and closer toward Lea, who always seems to be right about everything. The title, in English, is It’s Not Me, I Swear.
