Buffy Sainte-Marie: Carry It On (an Ontario-Manitoba co-production) is an in-depth music documentary that charts the life path of the acclaimed Cree singer-songwriter Buffy Sainte-Marie. From an unknown musician touring First Nations reservations and folk music festivals, Sainte-Marie grew to become a unique voice of protest during the Vietnam War. The first (and so far only) Indigenous artist to win an Oscar for Best Original Song, Sainte-Marie was subjected to censorship and blacklisting by two Presidential administrations (Johnson and Nixon) after using her fame and platform to publicly speak out about issues affecting Indigenous Peoples. The documentary features never-before-seen archival material, present-day performance footage and intimate interviews with both Sainte-Marie and many of her friends and contemporaries.
