1991 is the third film in Ricardo Trogi’s autobiographical trilogy, which began with films titled 1981 and 1987. It’s now 1991 and the lead character of Ricardo (Jean-Carl Boucher) is now 21 years old. When the love of his life insists that he accompany her to attend summer school in Italy, the young man cannot help but accept the invitation. Filled with hope, Ricardo leaves Quebec in pursuit of love. On his way, he encounters a panoply of colourful characters, including Arturo, a bohemian, a womanizing African exchange student who helps him learn some of the more important and necessary lessons of life, and a slightly worrisome Greek woman (Mara Lazaris) who won’t leave his side.

1991 was 2018’s top-grossing Canadian film at the box office earning $3.06 million. It was 1 of 7 Québec films in the top 10 for 2018.
