More Anne for CBC & Netflix

(August 3, 2017 – Toronto, ON) CBC and Netflix have announced the renewal of the acclaimed series Anne for a second season. Produced by Miranda de Pencier’s Northwood Entertainment, the second season sees the series expand from eight episodes to ten and will begin shooting this fall. Adored by audiences and critics alike, this re-imagined coming-of-age story follows Anne (Amybeth McNulty, pictured), an outsider who, against all odds, fights for love, acceptance, and her place in the world. Titled Anne in Canada, and Anne with an E on Netflix) season 2 returns in 2018.

“This exquisite series has drawn universal acclaim and introduced Anne Shirley to an entirely new generation, reaching an audience of 4.5 million in Canada*,” said Sally Catto, general manager, programming, CBC. “We know that the inspired cast and entire team will deliver an unforgettable second season.”

Inspired by the timeless Canadian young adult novel Anne of Green Gables by Lucy Maud Montgomery, the second season will continue to chart bold new territory, adding new characters and storylines and continuing to explore themes of identity, prejudice, feminism, bullying, gender parity and empowerment through the lens of its fierce, starry-eyed, irrepressible 14-year-old protagonist.

“This season is brave and bold and full of wonder,” said series creator Moira Walley-Beckett. “It is colorful, exciting, action-packed and, of course, full of heart. I can’t wait to share all the brand new adventures!”

The series stars Amybeth McNulty (Anne Shirley), Geraldine James (Marilla Cuthbert), R.H. Thomson (Matthew Cuthbert), Corrine Koslo (Rachel Lynde), Dalila Bela (Diana Barry), Aymeric Jett Montaz (Jerry Baynard) and Lucas Jade Zumann (Gilbert Blythe).

For season 2, the three-time Emmy® Award-winning Walley-Beckett has assembled an exceptionally talented all-female writers’ room. Episodes will be written by Jane Maggs (Bellevue, Cardinal), Shernold Edwards (Haven, Sleepy Hollow), Kathryn Borel (Rush, American Dad), Amanda Fahey (Saving Hope, Mohawk Girls), Naledi Jackson (21 Thunder, The Detail) as well as Moira Walley-Beckett.

“Anne Shirley is one of Canada’s greatest gifts to the world. We can’t wait to bring Anne’s next chapter to Netflix members globally,” said Elizabeth Bradley, Netflix vice president of content.

“We’re so proud of the overwhelming response from viewers across the globe,” added Miranda de Pencier, president of Northwood Entertainment. “I’m equally proud that we have a very talented team of female writers, led by the brilliant Moira Walley-Beckett, to add to the richness of the world.”

The CBC and Netflix original series is produced by Northwood Entertainment, and created by Moira Walley-Beckett. The executive producers are Miranda de Pencier, Moira Walley-Beckett, Sally Catto, Elizabeth Bradley, Alex Sapot, Debra Hayward, and Alison Owen. John Calvert serves as producer.
