Jeff Barnaby was an award-winning director of narrative films and music videos, but was best known for his short films that used unsettling elements of the horror and sci-fi genres to explore aspects of alienation and colonialism. A multi-disciplined artist, he won several awards for his art work, poetry, short stories and films. His production File Under Miscellaneous was adapted from the poem “Walking Around” by Pablo Neruda and premiered at the 2010 Toronto International Film Festival. In 2007 The Colony premiered at TIFF and was named one of Canada’s Top Ten Short Films by the festival. It went on to win the award for Best Canadian Short Drama at the imagineNATIVE Film & Media Arts Festival; Best Short Film at the Whistler Film Festival in British Columbia and at the Winnipeg Aboriginal Film Festival. CBC Television commissioned Barnaby’s From Cherry English which premiered at the 2005 Sundance Film Festival and won three Golden Sheaf Awards at the Yorkton Film Festival. Barnaby received his BFA in film production from Concordia University in Montreal, where he made his home. Rhymes for Young Ghouls was his debut feature and it had its world premiere at the 2013 Toronto International Film Festival.
He was 46 when he died of cancer in Montreal.
