(August 3, 2021 – Toronto, ON) Serendipity Point Films has announced the start of principal photography on the highly anticipated Crimes of the Future by the award-winning writer/director David Cronenberg. Critically acclaimed actors Tanaya Beatty (Yellowstone, Through Black Spruce) and Nadia Litz (Big Muddy, Hotel Congress, Blindness) join the previously announced cast which includes Viggo Mortensen (A History of Violence, Eastern Promises, Green Book), Léa Seydoux (No Time to Die, The French Dispatch, Blue is the Warmest Colour), Kristen Stewart (Seberg, Clouds of Sils Maria, Twilight), Scott Speedman (Barney’s Version, Adoration, the upcoming Sharp Stick), Welket Bungué (Berlin Alexanderplatz), Don McKellar (Blindness, eXistenZ), and Lihi Kornowski (Losing Alice). The film shoots in Athens, Greece until September 2021.
“As we begin filming Crimes Of The Future, just two days into this new adventure with David Cronenberg, it feels like we’ve entered a story he collaborated on with Samuel Beckett and William Burroughs, if that were possible,” said Viggo Mortensen. “We are being pulled into a world that is not quite like this or any other, and yet is one that feels strangely familiar, immediate and quite credible. I can’t wait to see where we end up.”
Produced by Robert Lantos (Barney’s Version, Eastern Promises, The Sweet Hereafter), the film reunites Cronenberg, a Cannes Jury Prize winner, Venice Career Golden Lion winner, and Berlin Silver Bear winner, with three-time Oscar nominee Viggo Mortensen, in their fourth collaboration. Yorgos Karamichos (The Durrells, Fugitive Pieces) boards the film, along with Yorgos Pirpassopoulos (Beckett, Monday).
Crimes Of The Future is a boldly original screenplay from the mind of celebrated auteur David Cronenberg, whose last original screenplay was eXistenZ in 1999. The film takes a deep dive into the not-so-distant future where humankind is learning to adapt to its synthetic surroundings. This evolution moves humans beyond their natural state and into a metamorphosis, altering their biological makeup. While some embrace the limitless potential of transhumanism, others attempt to police it. Either way, in this perfectly crafted Cronenberg world, which marks the iconic filmmaker’s return to sci-fi, “Accelerated Evolution Syndrome”, is spreading fast.
Crimes Of The Future is the fourth collaboration between Lantos and Cronenberg. Panos Papahadzis (Knifer, Stratos) is Producer for Athens-based Argonauts Productions and Steve Solomos (Possessor) is Co-producer. Executive Producers include Joe Iacono, Thorsten Schumacher, Peter Touche, Christelle Conan, Aida Tannyan, Victor Loewy, and Victor Hadida. Bonnie Do and Laura Lanktree are Associate Producers.
The film also unites frequent Cronenberg collaborators, award-winning production designer Carol Spier (Crash, Dead Ringers) and three-time Academy Award-winning composer Howard Shore (The Song Of Names, The Lord Of The Rings Trilogy, A History of Violence). Douglas Koch (Funny Boy, Children Ruin Everything) is cinematographer, with Mayou Trikerioti (Pari) as costume designer, Dimitris Katsikis (Fugitive Pieces) as art director, and Stefanos Efthymiou is sound recordist.
Crimes of the Future will be distributed worldwide by leading theatrical distributors: NEON (USA), MK2|MILE END (Canada), Metropolitan (France), Weltkino (Germany, Austria and Switzerland), The Searchers (Benelux), Argonauts Productions (Greece), Front Row (Middle East), Capella (CIS/ the Baltic States), Moviecloud (Taiwan).
