Tonya Lee Williams moved to Canada when she was 12, living with her parents in Oshawa, Ontario. Crowned “Miss Black Ontario” in 1977, when she was 18 years old, Tonya attended and graduated from Ryerson University’s Theatre School in Toronto. She has been nominated for the Outstanding Supporting Actress Daytime Emmy twice; once in 1996 and 2000. From 1995 to 1999 she was nominated for consecutive NAACP Image Awards in the category of Outstanding Lead Actress in a Daytime Drama. She won the award in 1999. It was announced in January of 2012 that she would receive the prestigious Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Achievement Award from Montreal’s Black Theatre Workshop.
