Tina Keeper

Born in Norway House, Tina Keeper moved with her family to the city of Winnipeg when she was four-years-old. She grew there and completed the acting program at the University of Winnipeg while working on a double major in History and Theatre. A member of the Norway House Cree Nation, she supplemented her stage work with workshops in mime, improvisation and dance, and after only two small film parts she landed the lead role of RCMP officer Michelle Kenidi on North of 60. In 1994, this critically acclaimed dramatic series received nine Gemini Award nominations, including Best Dramatic Series and Best Actress for Tina Keeper. She was nominated for Gemini Awards again in 1995 and 1996. The following year, 1997, Keeper finally won her Gemini for Best Actress in a Continuing Series. Keeper has been involved in a variety of social issues and was elected to Parliament in the 2006 federal election as the Liberal Party representative for Churchill, Manitoba, but lost her seat in the federal election of 2008.
