Sonja Smits

Sonja Smits is one of two daughters of Dutch immigrants who settled in the Ottawa Valley and ran a dairy farm south of the nation’s capital. She began her acting career on stage, and has performed at theaters such as Toronto’s Tarragon Theatre, Theatre Calgary, the Beverly Hills Playhouse and the Toronto Free Theatre. In 1980, she made her television debut in the made-for-TV movie War Brides, for which she received an ACTRA nomination. Sonja won a Gemini Award for her work on the series, Street Legal. She was the 2004 recipient of ACTRA Toronto’s Award of Excellence, presented to her by 2003 recipient, Gordon Pinsent. In The Rings of Saturn, Smits stretched herself to become a dancer. That is, she did not “act” as a dancer, but, in fact, danced. And very well at that.
