Rod Cameron

Rod Cameron began life as Nathan Roderick Cox and grew up in Calgary. When he was 12-years-old his father died and the family moved to New York. Following school, Cameron worked in a variety of construction jobs during the Depression before heading to California. Working on the construction of a tunnel outside of Palm Springs, friends encouraged Cameron to try the film business. He tested for several studios and was picked up by Paramount in 1939 as a contract player. He started in the movies as a stand-in for Fred McMurray but in 1943, he moved to Republic Pictures and found himself the lead in 2 15-chapter low-budget serials, Secret Service in Darkest Africa and G-Men vs. The Black Dragon, now considered classics of the genre. In 1945 he appeared alongside fellow Canadian Yvonne De Carlo in Salome: Where She Danced for Universal. The film was an unexpected hit and made De Carlo a star in Hollywood. Cameron worked with Donald Woods in Heritage of the Desert and Lois Maxwell in 1955’s Passport to Treason. Although he was in a number of horror, war, action and sci-fi movies, he mostly appeared in low- to medium-budget Westerns and action pictures, and at one point there was even a Rod Cameron comic book. In all he would appear in 100 films and 400 television shows. His star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame can be found at 1720 Vine Street.
