By time he had turned 25, Paul Hébert knew what he wanted to do. He had finished school at at the Collège de Lévis and set out for England to study at the Old Vic Theatre School in London. He returned to Québec in 1952 and joined les Comédiens de Québec, which had been started by a friend of his, the actor Pierre Boucher. Hébert went on to start a series of his own theatre companies, including the Théâtre Anjou in Montréal (1954-56); Québec’s first summer theatre, Le Chanteclerc in Sainte-Adèle located in the Laurentian Mountains north of Montreal (1956); Théâtre L’Estérel in Sainte-Marguerite (1961); L’Atelier (de théâtre) in Montréal (1964); and then attaching his name to the Théâtre Paul-Hébert on Île d’Orléans (1982). Along the way he had headed the Conservatoire d’art dramatique in Montréal (1969) and in Québec City (1970). Hébert was also the first artistic director of the Théâtre du Trident (1970-77).In addition to his stage career, Paul Hébert enjoyed a long and successful career in film and television. Hébert was given the Prix Victor-Morin from la Société Saint-Jean-Baptiste (1973) and was made an Officer of the Order of Canada (1987). Other awards and recognition include the Chevalier de l’Ordre national du Québec (1994), a Governor General’s Performing Arts Award (1995), the Prix Gascon-Thomas from the National Theatre School (1997), and honorary doctorates from the Université du Québec (1984) and Université Laval (2000). In 1977, the Théâtre du Trident created the Prix Paul-Hébert, that annually highlights the exceptional performance of a Québec actor or actress in a premier role.
