Michael J. Fox

Michael Andrew Fox moved several times during his childhood along with his parents, brother, and three sisters, finally settling in Burnaby, British Columbia when his dad retired from the Canadian Armed Forces in 1971. He loved to play hockey when he was a kid and dreamed of a career in the National Hockey League, but as he grew up his interests changed and he started to try his hand at creative writing and art. He also played guitar in a succession of rock-and-roll garage bands which helped a lot in the first Back to the Future movie. Ultimately, of course, he tried acting and made his professional debut at 15 co-starring in Leo and Me with Brent Carver. When he was 18, he moved to Los Angeles and his career blossomed. He was diagnosed with young-onset Parkinson’s disease in 1991 but only went public about his condition in 1998. He announced his retirement from Spin City in January 2000, effective upon the completion of his fourth season and 100th episode. Despite becoming an American citizen, his love of Canada – and our love of him – was on display during the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics where he took part in the closing ceremonies. Michael J. Fox continues to work and has committed himself to the campaign for increased Parkinson’s research.
