Kathleen Howard, pictured with fellow Canadian actor Deanna Durbin, was a Metropolitan opera star from 1916 through 1928, turning to acting only after her voice broke. She was also an accomplished writer, serving on the executive staff of Harper`s Bazaar. She made her first movie appearance cast as an Italian grande dame, in Death Takes a Holiday. W.C. Fields fans loved her portrayals as his nagging wife in It`s a Gift and The Man on the Flying Trapeze. Some references state her birth date as July 17 in either 1879 or 1880.
