Kate Daphne Reid was born in England but moved to Canada when she was just 10 months old. She was educated in Toronto before appearing at Hart House Theatre and subsequently on the summer theatre circuit including her professional debut at the Straw Hat Theatre in Muskoka, Ontario. She was nominated for an Emmy for her role as Queen Victoria in the 1963 television production of The Invincible Mr. Disraeli. She won a Tony Award for her stage work in Dylan in 1964 and again in 1966 for Slapstick Tragedy. Reid was also honoured with an ACTRA Award and was given the Dora Mavor Moore Award in 1980 and 1981. She was nominated for Golden Globe Awards in 1973 for A Delicate Balance and again in 1985 for Death of a Salesman which costarred Dustin Hoffman and was filmed for broadcast. She distinguished herself as Burt Lancaster’s nagging girlfriend in Atlantic City, for which she won a Genie for Supporting Actress. A regular member of the Stratford Festival, Reid appeared in various productions and also graced the stages of the Shaw Festival in Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ontario and the National Arts Centre in Ottawa. A member of the Order of Canada, Kate Reid died of brain tumours when she was 62.
