Jan Rubes graduated from the Prague Conservatory of Music in 1945, and went on to become the youngest basso at the Prague Opera House. In 1948 he represented his homeland at the International Music Festival in Geneva where he was awarded first prize. Hoping to expand his musical career he immigrated to Canada on New Year`s Eve 1948. He was very influential in the development of opera in Canada and in particular had a long association with the Canadian Opera Company where he not only appeared on stage in a number of singing roles but also served as director of touring and development for the company. Although in film for many years, he began to be noticed after his role in the 1985 Harrison Ford feature, Witness. In 1995, he was made a Member of the Order of Canada. Jan Rubes died in Toronto on June 29th, 2009 after suffering a stroke.
