Eugene “Gene” Lockhart made his professional debut at the age of six when he appeared with The Kilties Band of Canada. At the age of 15, he was appearing in sketches with actress Beatrice Lillie. In 1919, he wrote the words to a melody by Toronto composer Ernest Seitz and the result was a song titled The World Is Waiting For The Sunrise. Its sentiment proved to be just what North American audiences were craving shortly after the First World War. A massive hit, over the years it has been recorded by more than 100 artists, including Ted Lewis, Benny Goodman, and Duke Ellington. A version by Les Paul and Mary Ford became a million seller in 1949. He is pictured in a publicity still from the 1952 feature Face to Face based on the Joseph Conrad story The Secret Sharer.
