Fiona Reid

Fiona Reid was born in England, the daughter of a British military doctor, the family lived in Germany, Africa, and the United States before settling in Canada in 1964. She first became interested in acting while at Toronto’s Lawrence Park Collegiate. She went on to study theatre at McGill University in Montréal and at the Banff Centre for the Arts in Alberta. Now one of Canada’s best known stage actors, Reid has performed across the country, inluding five seasons with Stratford and 12 seasons at Shaw. She has also performed on stage in Great Britain and the United States. Throughout her career, her performances have garnered her two Dora Mavor Moore Awards — for Fallen Angels at the St. Lawrence Centre in 1993, and for Six Degrees of Separation at CanStage in 1995 — a Jessie Award (Vancouver) and a Sterling Award (Edmonton). In 2015, Reid received the Toronto Theatre Critics’ Award for her performance of Sonia in Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike (Mirvish Productions). Her career has been marked by diverse signature roles that include Amanda (The Glass Menagerie), Blanche Dubois (A Streetcar Named Desire), Lady Bracknell (The Importance of Being Earnest), Martha (Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?), Mrs. Lovett (Sweeney Todd), Hedda Gabler (Hedda Gabler) and Claire (A Delicate Balance), among others. In 2010, Reid was honoured by the Alliance of Canadian Cinema, Television and Radio Artists (ACTRA) with their Award of Excellence, a distinction that followed the Toronto Life Women of Distinction Award in 2006, becoming a Member of the Order of Canada in 2006 and the Barbara Hamilton Memorial Award in 2008. Reid has received an honorary doctorate from Bishop’s University and is a graduate of McGill University.
