Eric Peterson studied drama for two years at the University of Saskatchewan before finishing his degree at the University of British Columbia where he received a Bachelor of Arts in performance drama. He began his career on stage in 1971 when he was a co-founder of the Vancouver collective theatre company, Tamahnous Theatre. In 1974 he moved to Toronto and joined Theatre Passe Muraille. In 1976, Peterson collaborated with John MacLachlan Gray when he co-wrote and acted in his most critically-acclaimed stage play Billy Bishop Goes to War. The play premiered in Vancouver in 1978 and went on tour internationally, garnering positive reviews on Broadway and in London`s West End and was later made into a made-for-TV movie. Despite his stage work he was best known for his work on television, including his award-winning role of Leon Robinovitch, a left-wing lawyer, on the series Street Legal, as Judge Declan Malone on This is Wonderland, and on the hit CTV series Corner Gas where he played the role of Oscar Leroy, father of Brent Leroy, played by Brent Butt. In early 2008 it was announced that Peterson would receive ACTRA Toronto`s Award of Excellence. In October of 2009, Peterson was given the coveted Earle Grey Award for Lifetime Achievement at the 24th annual Gemini Awards. In 2011 he was named to The Order of Canada and received his medal at a ceremony in Ottawa in May of 2012. It was announced in 2018 that he would take on the Canadian courtroom again on a reboot of Street Legal, but befitting the passage of time from the original hit series, his character Leon Robinovitch has become a judge. Original cast member Cynthia Dale also returns in her role as Olivia Novak.
