Andrea Martin first appeared in children’s theatre. Later as a teenager, she made her professional debut as a singer at Portland’s annual Armenian Dance and Picnic. After earning her degree from Maine’s Emerson College, she moved to New York City and almost immediately landed the role of Lucy in a stage production of You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown. Following her heart to Toronto, she appeared with Martin Short, Gilda Radner and Victor Garber in Godspell. Other stage roles followed and one day she was invited to join the Second City troupe as they were developing a TV variety series. After spending two years with the stage version of Toronto’s Second City she costarred in the TV series that ran under different names for another seven years. During the series she was nominated for 10 Emmy Awards winning two for writing. She was also nominated for Best Actress. As part of the cast of Second City’s 15th Anniversary Special, she earned two American Comedy Award nominations. In 1992, she made her Broadway debut in the musical My Favorite Year earning a Tony award for Featured Actress in a Musical. In 2005 she hosted the 25th Annual Genie Awards. At the time she was on Broadway in a revival of Fiddler on the Roof. In June of 2013 Andrea Martin won her second Tony Award for “best performance in a featured role by an actress” for her role in the Broadway production of Pippin. It also won “best consume design for a musical” for Canadian Dominique Lemieux. Primarily an American who spent a great part of her early career in Canada, Andrea is an American who is considered to be an “honourary” Canadian by all of her fans in this country.
