Allister MacDonald

Toronto-based Allister MacDonald worked with Thom Fitzgerald on the feature Splinters and was cast by Fitzgerald for his 2020 film Stage Mother. Set in the drag world of San Francisco, Stage Mother is a feel-good musical journey that had its glittering debut at the 2020 Palm Springs International Film Festival, earning praise as “Best of Fest.” Commenting on the film, Allister MacDonald said: “Working on Stage Mother was a dream come true. Not only did I have the chance to perform alongside Hollywood heavy weights, but I was given the opportunity to bring a special nuance to a wonderfully vulnerable queer character. Queer actors are so often asked to play small stereotypical and often offensive caricatures of ‘gay people’. With Stage Mother I had the chance to bring a complex queer character to life and really explore the possibilities, the layers and depth of her humanity, and with that, honour very human experiences on screen.”
