Paul Gross was a Canadian Army brat. He and his family rarely spent more than two years in one place and so he grew up and went to school in England, Germany and the United States before returning to Canada in the 1970s. Even then the moving continued. He has lived in New Brunswick and in Toronto, Ontario in addition to his hometown of Calgary. Schooling included Cheswyks School in Frimley Green, England, as well as in New Brunswick. But it was a high school drama teacher in Washington that gave him the inspiration to work as an actor. He finished high school at the Earl Haig Secondary School in Toronto, Ontario and spent a summer working as a gofer at the Stratford Festival box office when he was 16. Here he heard of the reputation of the University of Alberta’s acting program and moved to Edmonton, dropping out in his third year to pursue his career as an actor and playwright. He returned later to complete the half-credit he needed to receive his fine arts degree. He’s been married to actress Martha Burns since October 1988. Paul Gross costarred with Kim Cattrall in the stage production of Noel Coward’s Private lives, at the Royal Alexandra Theatre in Toronto in 2011 before the play moved to Broadway. Paul Gross is pictured when he was honoured with the highly prestigious Earle Grey Award at the 2015 Canadian Screen Awards. The Earle Grey Award is presented to an actor/actress for a body of work in Canadian television, or for their significant contribution to the international profile of Canadian television.
