Bootlegger in Sweden
by Staff Editors
(January 11, 2022 – Toronto, ON) Microclimat Films has announced that Bootlegger, Caroline Monnet’s first feature film, has been selected for the prestigious Göteborg Film Festival in Sweden, which runs from January 28 to February 6, 2022. Created in 1979, this is the most important festival in Scandinavia and will mark the film’s international premiere.
In 2021, Bootlegger won the Emerging Canadian Filmmaker Award at the Vancouver International Film Festival (VIFF), the Best Dramatic Film Award at imagineNATIVE in Toronto and opened the 50th Festival du nouveau cinéma (FNC) in Montreal. In 2016, it was also selected for the CineMart in Rotterdam and the Berlinale Co-Production Market in Berlin, while Monnet received a residency offered by the Cannes’ Cinefondation.
Bootlegger centres on Mani, a master’s student, who returns to a remote region in northern Quebec where she grew up. Her painful past resurfaces. Resolved to reintegrate into the community, she gets involved in the debate around a referendum on allowing the free sale of alcohol. Laura, a bootlegger, pockets the profits she makes under the protection of the band council and her partner Raymond. The latter is still angry with Mani, whom he holds responsible for the death of his daughter in a fire. Two radically opposed women divide the community into two sides who face each other to determine the best path to independence.
Monnet’s film was shot partially in the community of Kitigan Zibi Anishinabeg. It stars Pascale Bussières, Devery Jacobs, Samian, Jacques Newashish, Dominique Pétin, Joséphine Bacon, C, S, Gilbert Crazy Horse, Charles Bender, and Brigitte Poupart in the lead roles.
Produced by Catherine Chagnon for Microclimat Films with the financial participation of SODEC, Telefilm Canada, The Harold Greenberg Fund, in association with Best Friend Forever, in collaboration with Société Radio-Canada and Super Écran, Bootlegger is directed by Caroline Monnet from a script by Caroline Monnet and Daniel Watchorn. Pierre Even is the executive producer.
