More CSA 2021 Numbers

(March 30, 2021 – Toronto, ON) Nominations are important and a great publicity tool for production companies and networks. Shortly after the 2021 Canadian Screen Awards were announced, the email inbox began to buzz.
Some of the buzz? CBC/RADIO-CANADA Celebrates 309 Canadian Screen Award Nominations; Shaftesbury Honoured with 16 Canadian Screen Award Nominations; White Pine Pictures Receives 9 Canadian Screen Award Nominations.
Details: At White Pine Pictures, nominations include the Barbara Sears Award for Best Visual Research and Best Sound, Non-Fiction for the documentary Once Were Brothers: The Robbie Robertson and the Band. The doc, Margaret Atwood: A Word After a Word After a Word is Power was also nominated for the Barbara Sears Award for Best Visual Research along with nominations for Best Sound, Non-Fiction, and Best Original Music, Non-Fiction for composer Todor Kobakov. And Toxic Beauty picked up four nominations including Best Direction, Documentary Program and Best Writing, Documentary Program for Phyllis Ellis as well as the Barbara Sears Award for Best Visual Research and Best Original Music, Non-Fiction for composer Robert Carli. At Shaftesbury, Murdoch Mysteries picked up 4 nominations including Best Supporting Actor, Drama for Jonny Harris; Best Guest Performance, Drama Series for Colin Mochrie, Best Costume Design for Joanna Syrokomla and Best Achievement in Hair for Shirley Bond. Frankie Drake Mysteries received 6 nominations including Best Direction, Drama Series for Mina Shum, Best Supporting Actress, Drama for Sharron Matthews, Best Guest Performance, Drama Series for Wendy Crewson, Best Production Design or Art Direction, Fiction for Armando Sgrignuoli and Andrew Kawczynski, Best Costume Design for Jenifur Jarvis and Best Achievement in Hair for Cindy Lou Tache. The series Hudson & Rex picked up 1 nomination for Best Sound, Fiction. And, the production Departure about an investigation into the shocking disappearance of Flight 716, a passenger plane that vanishes over the Atlantic Ocean, received 5 nominations including Best Drama Series for producers Christina Jennings, Scott Garvie, Malcolm MacRury, T.J. Scott, Vincent Shiao and Patrick Cassavetti. Other nominations include Best Supporting Actor, Drama for the late Christopher Plummer, Best Supporting Actor, Drama for Evan Buliung, Best Photography, Drama for Craig Wright and Best Picture Editing, Drama for Paul Winestock.
To list all 309 nominations for the CBC would be a task beyond our capabilities but a few notable numbers are a huge total of 22 nominations for Schitt’s Creek, the most for any production television or film. CBC News picked up 31 nominations and their original unscripted, arts and documentary programming received 93 nominations led by The Nature of Things, Enslaved, Toxic Beauty (as previously mentioned) CompanyTown, Still Standing (A Northernstars favourite), and The Great Canadian Baking show.
