| (January 13, 2014 – Toronto, Ontario) It was standing room only in the 2nd floor ballroom at the Ritz-Carlton Hotel in downtown Toronto this morning as the Academy of Canadian Cinema & Television`s CEO, Helga Stephenson and Chair Martin Katz took to the podium to introduce this year`s presenters for the announcement of the nominees for the 2014 Canadian Screen Awards (CSAs). There was a bit of housekeeping at the beginning with the announcement that for this year, only the second for the CSAs, the Academy had received a record number of entries, and that membership in the Academy had grown considerably over the past 12 months. | |||
| “We are exceedingly proud today to reveal the nominees for the 2014 Canadian Screen Awards,” said Katz. “This was a year marked by a record-breaking number of submissions, reflecting a robust level of activity in the screen-based industries in Canada which we will celebrate during Canadian Screen Week, March 3-9.”
Helga Stephenson reminded the audience that 2014 marked “65 years of celebrating leading talent in Canada: first film, then television and now digital media…with the greatest Canadian stars in our history gracing our awards year after The hosts for the announcements, actors Kathryn Winnick and David Sutcliffe were introduced and the routine of introducing the nominees by category began. Northernstars.ca will be covering the Canadian Screen Awards in March and will publish a complete list of winners at that time. In the interest of space and time, we have for today picked some of the highlights from the nomination announcements. A surprising 8 films were nominated for Best Motion Picture. They are, Le Démantèlment/The Dismantlement, Empire of Dirt, Enemy, The F Word, Gabrielle, The Grand Seduction, Maina and Tom at the Farm. Produced by the award-winning team of Luc Déry and Kim McCraw, Enemy received the most nominations, a total of 10, leading Tom at the Farm with 8, then Gabrielle (which is another Déry-McCraw film), Maina and The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones with 6 each Nominations for Achievement in Direction included Sébastien Pilote for Le Démantèlment/The Dismantlement, Denis Villeneuve for Enemy, Michael Dowse for The F Word, Xavier Dolan for Tom at the Farm, and Pedro Pires and Robert Lepage for Triptyque. We found it a bit of a surprise, what with all the nationalistic chest beating that had being going on, to find so many non-Canadians nominated for Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role. Only one Canadian, Gabriel Arcand, made it onto the list for his work in Le Démantèlment/The Dismantlement. Other nominees include Jake Gyllenhall for Enemy, Daniel Radcliffe for The F Word, Brendon Gleeson for The Grand Seduction and Rajesh Tailand, a graduate of the National School of Drama in Delhi, who starred in Richie Mehta`s Siddarth. For Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role, Tatiana Maslany, who was shut-out at both the Emmys and The Golden Globes for her work in the TV series, Orphan Black was nominated for her work in Cas & Dylan. Other nominees include Cara Gee for Empire of Dirt, Gabrielle Marion-Rivard for Gabrielle, Kawennahere Devery Jacobs for Rhymes for Young Ghouls and and Isabelle Guérard for Rouge Sang. On the television list, which is substantial given all of the craft categories, of the 5 shows nominated for Best Dramatic Series, two of them are no longer in production, Bomb Girls and Flashpoint, while one of them, Motive has yet to return to the regular schedule although it has been renewed for a 2nd season by both CTV and ABC south of the border. Orphan Black, which received the most TV nominations across all categories is also in the running as is the APTN hit series Blackstone.
