Born in Ireland, Gerard Parkes immigrated to Canada in 1956 and began in show business on CBC Radio in 1959. He is pictured in a still from the first film he appeared in, Paul Almond’s Isabel, playing Genevieve Bujold’s kindly uncle, a role that brought him a Canadian Film Award for best supporting actor. He also received the Andrew Allan Award in 1983 for best radio actor. His long career included work in the U.S., as well as Canadian movies such as A Fan’s Notes, Who Has Seen the Wind, Speaking Parts and The Adjuster. He is perhaps best known for his role as Doc on the Fraggle Rock series, where he played the character, an inventor, blissfully unaware that his workshop leads to Fraggle Rock`s underground grotto. Gerard Parkes died in a Toronto retirement home, four days after his 90th birthday.
The image of Gerard Parkes was scanned from one of seven original lobby cards for the film Isabel in the Northernstars Collection.
