Claire Adams was a leading lady of the Silent Era. She retired just before “talkies” took over. Although born in Canada, Adams went to school in England and became a nurse after World War I. Shortly after returning to Canada she moved to Hollywood and began a career in silent movies, marrying her producer, Benjamin Hampton. When Hampton died in 1932, Claire Adams had effectively given up her career and hadn’t made in a movie in five years. However, she didn’t have to work as Hampton had left her a fortune. In 1938, Adams was 40 and still a beauty. She remarried a wealthy Scotsman, Scobie Mackinnon and having no attachment to Hollywood they moved to Australia where they lived a life of leisure until Mackinnon passed away in 1974. This left Adams quite wealthy and, without any children from either marraige, when she died in 1978 she left money to create a wildlife sanctuary in Australia as well as helping a number of charities.
