Inspired by the stinging bestseller, The Inconvenient Indian, written by one of the world’s foremost Indigenous intellectuals and one of the greatest storytellers Thomas King (who serves as narrator), this documentary journeys across North America to explore the ways Indigenous peoples continue to inconvenience colonial states with their existence and their resistance. Like most documentaries, Latimer weaves archival footage, interviews, dance, visual arts, and traditional customs like tattooing and hunting into her original footage. Well-known figures like visual artist Kent Monkman and filmmaker Alethea Arnaquq-Baril are some of people Latimer focuses her camera on, along with hunters, community workers and emerging film artists.

Inconvenient Indian was given the Amplify Voices Award for Best Canadian Feature presented by Canada Goose at the 2020 Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF). The prize comes with a $10,000 cash prize. It was also the winner of the Allan King Award for Excellence in Documentary in 2020 by the Director’s Guild of Canada.
