Inspired by real events that took place in 1989, Target Number One follows three interconnected stories: an ex heroin junkie named Daniel Léger (Antoine-Olivier Pilon), who gets trapped by a criminal organization to set up a drug deal in Thailand and is thrown into a Thai prison and slapped with a 100-year sentence; an undercover cop who’s humiliated and decides to take a short cut to enhance the performance of his team; and Globe and Mail journalist Victor Malarek, who decides to go after the shady undercover cops responsible for wrongly accusing Daniel but is forced to re-evaluate his core convictions and maverick methods after the birth of his first child.
Based on the exploits of Canadian investigative reporter Victor Malarek, whose autobiography was made into the 1988 film Malarek.
