Set in Montréal in the 1920s, ‘30s and ‘40s, Debbie Lynch-White plays the role of Québec singer Mary Travers, not to be confused of the singer of the same name who was part of the trio Peter, Paul and Mary many years later. Married to Édouard Bolduc, and with a family to take care of, when Edward loses his job at the mill, Mary agrees to replace a violinist in a folkloric evening and it seems her career path is set. She rapidly becomes successful in a changing Quebec, thanks in part to recordings and radio. Meanwhile the province is experiencing its first push in the fight for women’s rights who as her success grows faces the dilemma of staying with her children or going on tour to provide for her family. Named La Bolduc by her public, and thus the title of this film, it went on to become the 2nd highest grossing film in Canada in 2018 and won 6 Prix Iris in June of 2019.
Writing his review in the Montreal Gazette, Brendan Kelly said, “Debbie Lynch-White is…a force of nature on the big screen.”
