Based on the novel by Joan Clark, a beautiful, talented concert pianist named Maura Mackenzie (Carolina Bartczak) has reached a point where her career is gaining momentum and her beauty and talent will be strong enough to mask the demons that threaten to engulf her. But with an absent husband (Chris Jacot) and two young daughters at home, her precarious sanity begins to unravel until one summer day. Caught up in a manic creative episode, she makes a terrible mistake — a mistake that results in catastrophic consequences. She has left her children unattended on an island. Her ambitious husband leaves her, taking the children with him, leaving Maura to lapse into a full-scale breakdown. Diagnosed as borderline schizophrenic, she is left to struggle with her demons and live without sight or sound of her children until twenty years later when a chance encounter brings them back into her life.
