Malek is a Lebanese immigrant living in Montreal. Haunted by the death of his sister, he is convinced that he could have avoided this tragedy. Gnawed by guilt, he lives almost as a hermit, alone, and without work. Geneviève, a psychologist helps him revisit his past while at the same time he meets Shohreh, a young Iranian women whom he falls in love with. A new life opens up to him and he quickly finds work. Malek gradually regains his dignity but the past resurfaces to the point where he is pushed, almost in spite of himself, to finally settle his accounts with himself.

Malek was originally titled Mr. Roach and is an adaptation of the novel Le Cafard by Lebanese author Rawi Hage.
