Don't let the title of this film fool you. You may think it's about curling, but its tagline is closer to the truth: There's more than one way to sweep a girl off her feet. Men with Brooms marks the directorial debut of actor and writer Paul Gross. It is, if nothing else, a love story. But there is more. It is very funny, in places, if you like the kind of humour teens and preteens are into. Made for a paltry, by US standards, $7.5 million Canadian, the movie is a bit of a departure from the normal "Canadian" movie. That is, there is a definite attempt here to craft a hit movie. A movie that will actually create more than some media buzz, but deliver some box-office bucks back to the producers. And it could. The story is well told, if a little too Canadian in places, and the acting is solid. Paul Gross has also made a very good start in his first outing as a feature director.
